Business Data Recovery & System Failure Response

Data loss in a business environment is rarely a simple issue.

It is typically the result of underlying system failure — storage faults, RAID degradation, virtual machine corruption, or failed backup processes. Attempting recovery without understanding the root cause can make the situation significantly worse.

Kent-ITS provides structured, engineering-led data recovery for business systems, focusing on stabilising the environment, preserving original data, and recovering information wherever possible.

When Data Loss Occurs

Business data loss is commonly caused by:

  • Failed or degrading hard drives
  • RAID array corruption or failed rebuilds
  • Virtual machine or hypervisor issues
  • File system corruption
  • Backup failure or incomplete recovery
  • Ransomware or unauthorised access
  • Power loss or improper shutdown

In many cases, the initial failure is compounded by incorrect recovery attempts.

Our Approach

We treat data recovery as a system-level problem, not just file recovery.

1. Stabilisation

  • Immediate isolation of affected systems
  • Prevention of further data loss
  • Identification of hardware or storage faults

2. Diagnosis

  • Analysis of disk health, RAID state, and logs
  • Assessment of virtualisation platforms (VMware, XCP-ng)
  • Identification of failure point and recovery options

3. Controlled Recovery

  • Recovery performed using structured, low-risk methods
  • Data extracted from damaged systems where viable
  • Reconstruction of file systems or virtual machines
  • Restoration from backup where appropriate

Controlled Recovery Process

Where recovery is performed in-house, the first priority is to preserve the original media and prevent further damage.

  • A full sector-by-sector image of the affected disk is created
  • All recovery work is carried out against the image, not the original drive
  • The original drive is left untouched after imaging

This ensures that:

  • No additional damage is caused during recovery attempts
  • Multiple recovery methods can be safely tested
  • The original data remains preserved in its current state

Critically:

  • The original drive can still be sent to a specialist cleanroom facility if required
  • No prior recovery attempts have reduced the likelihood of a successful recovery

Incorrect handling of failing disks is one of the most common causes of permanent data loss. This approach avoids that risk from the outset.

Advanced & Specialist Recovery

Not all recovery can be performed on-site.

In cases involving physical disk failure or severe damage, Kent-ITS coordinates recovery through specialist laboratory facilities equipped for hardware-level recovery.

We manage the entire process:

  • Initial diagnosis and handling
  • Secure transport of affected media
  • Liaison with specialist engineers
  • Validation and reintegration of recovered data

Clients retain a single point of contact throughout.

Mail, Server & Virtualisation Recovery

Business recovery often involves more than individual files.

We regularly work with:

  • Multi-disk RAID arrays
  • Virtualised environments (VMware, XCP-ng)
  • Server-based systems and shared storage
  • Email platforms and application data

Recovery is performed with full awareness of system dependencies to avoid further disruption.

Security & Incident Response

Where data loss is linked to a security issue:

  • Systems are isolated to prevent further compromise
  • Access and authentication logs are reviewed
  • Recovery is carried out alongside system hardening

This ensures systems are not only recovered, but secured against repeat incidents.

Real-World Engineering Experience

Our recovery work is based on practical, real-world system experience, including:

  • Disk failure and degraded RAID scenarios
  • Backup systems that have failed or only partially completed
  • Virtual machine corruption and recovery
  • Email systems under load or failure conditions

Recovery is not approached as a single task, but as part of the wider system.

The Outcome

A structured recovery approach that:

  • Maximises the likelihood of successful data recovery
  • Prevents further damage to systems
  • Identifies and resolves root causes
  • Supports long-term system stability

Prevention & Next Steps

Where appropriate, we also implement:

  • Backup validation and monitoring
  • Improved storage design
  • Disaster recovery planning

To reduce the risk of future incidents.

Important

Not all data can be recovered, particularly where media is physically damaged or overwritten.

Where recovery is not commercially viable, clear guidance is provided before further costs are incurred.
